Our Values

The Living Room works to create a space that's approachable, diverse, and supportive.

APPROACHABLE means we're not snobby or exclusive. While we do offer classes for advanced writers, many of our classes are all-levels, and everyone is welcome at our public events. You don't have to worry about whether you're a "real writer" to take classes, come to readings, or make friends here. Anyone with an interest in writing, reading, or literary arts is welcome at our space.

DIVERSE means we make effort to make our programs welcoming to people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, and levels of ability. We try to be inclusive and mindful of power dynamics, and diversity is a factor in our selection of teachers and participants.

SUPPORTIVE means we try to create a non-competitive environment. While critical thinking and constructive critique are an important part of the literary arts, ultimately we’re here to support each other, not be in competition. Teachers and participants alike are encouraged to leave any mean-spirited or egotistical attitudes at the door. The Living Room is a place for all writers to feel supported and welcomed.

The Workshop Experience

The Living Room offers thoughtful creative experiences for writers and aspiring writers of every level. Here’s what you can expect:

INTIMATE: Our workshop sizes are intentionally small, with a maximum of 12 students. We want our teachers to have time to focus on and support each student, and to give your work the attention it deserves.

NON-COMPETITIVE: We're here to support each other, not tear each other down! While some workshops may involve critique or constructive criticism, we discourage mean-spirited or egotistical attitudes.

FRIEND-LY: One of the best parts of taking a workshop at The Living Room is all the people you will meet! Our cozy, non-competitive vibe encourages participants to make new friends and contacts and expand your literary community. Come tap into a network of fellow writers, readers, authors, agents, editors, mentors, and lovers of the literary arts that are committed to seeing you—and Santa Fe’s literary community—succeed.

PLACES TO GO, ROOM TO GROW: We don't want you to hit a wall with your writing, at The Living Room or anywhere else. As we grow, we add more intermediate and advanced workshops to meet the needs of our community. Let us know what you workshops you'd like to see offered and we'll do our best to create them!
